About Us

The On These Shoulders Research Collaborative, led by Dr. Barb Hamilton-Hinch, is a centre dedicated to producing evidence-based research to address racial inequities and empower communities who have been marginalized. Our team is multidisciplinary, including members from faculties of medicine, nursing, health administration, health promotion, law, child and youth studies, education, social work, dentistry, and more. We are based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in the School of Health and Human Performance at Dalhousie University, but collaborate with other faculties, organizations, and institutions around the globe.

We recognize all of our ancestors, predecessors, and trail-blazers who came before us. Who shared their knowledge and wisdom, and paved the way for us to hold privileged spaces and positions. We wouldn’t be where we are, doing the work that we do without them—we stand On Their Shoulders. And now we work to lift and empower the next generation.

Our Pillars

All our work is guided by three key pillars:

1) Address inequities across disciplines—with a focus on health, leisure, education

2) Empower and support communities who have been marginalized

3) Use our evidence-based knowledge, lived experiences, and power and privilege to advocate for change
